Ms. Linda Simmons-Henry, Director of Library Services, joined over 400 HBCU Library Directors and other library staff members from across the nation at the HBCU Library Alliance 10th Annual Membership Conference in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, on October 27-29, 2024. The theme for the 2024 conference was “Empowering our Members to Face the Future of Democracy and Education.”

“Participation at this conference has been instrumental in empowering our libraries,” noted Ms. Simmons-Henry. “It also enhances our resources and ultimately supports the academic success of our students.”

She continued her sentiment, sharing that the conference provides a unique opportunity to explore innovative approaches to librarianship and to connect with colleagues who share a commitment to preserving and promoting the rich heritage of HBCU libraries. “With the renovation of the D. R. Glass Library, it has become a critical component of students' success by providing access to essential resources and fostering academic inquiry, as well as offering space for collaborative learning. Collectively, libraries empower students with the tools and support needed for research, personal growth, and academic achievement.”

Ms. Simmons-Henry also served as a presenter for the conference, where she discussed the D.R. Glass Library’s democracy and education initiatives, which aligned with the conference’s theme. She discussed informational and educational resources to best engage students, updated topical books and library guides surrounding education and democracy, as well as the library’s implementation of voter education research projects. She congruently shared strategies for increasing young college students’ participation and engagement in democracy.
